"Life was not ending. A new life was beginning...
FRANCES LIEF NEER suffered from low vision throughout her life and eventually became blind in 1980. Just as she lost her sight totally, her adult son died and left her his 13-year-old daughter to raise. Neer's work since then tells of her life in the past twenty years. She has written wonderful volumes that illustrate how individuals can thrive without the benefit of sight. She graces us with her wisdom; she teaches through her own example. Neer's first book, Dancing in the Dark, is a direct, good humored, non-threatening reference guide for living in a frightening situation. This was followed by Perceiving the Elephant, and Breaking Barriers. In her last book, Too Busy To Die, Neer unveils the rest of her story. Fearless throughout her long and
triumphantly full life, she transports readers from the Rockaway of her
youth to her San Francisco of today. Through her still passionate point of view,
her exceptional sense of humor and timing, the author reveals herself: highly
motivated, never downtrodden, and as vibrant and vital today as ever.
Frances Neer's books have received many professional endorsements. She was a frequent lecturer and guest on television and radio talk shows, including PBS. She led a forum sponsored by the University of California, Department of Ophthalmology at UC Medical Center and was also a peer counselor. Frances Lief Neer passed away peacefully on Memorial day, May 28, 2007. (Please click for her obituary)
